Which Tradescantia Matches Your Personality?
Sometimes we choose our plants, but sometimes I think they choose us. Have you ever noticed how certain Tradescantias just feel right in your home? The bold ones, the dramatic ones, the fast growers, or the easy going types. We all have a style, even if we do not always realize it.
So today we are doing something a little different. Instead of talking about care tips or favourite varieties, we are turning it into a quiz. Answer the questions and at the end you will find out which Tradescantia matches your personality. Let’s see if it feels accurate.
Tradescantia of the Week: Zebrina Leprechaun
Leprechaun has only been around for a couple of years. It was registered in 2023. The plant was bred in 2021 as an open pollinated seedling, believed to be a cross between Tradescantia zebrina ‘Purple Plush’ and Tradescantia zebrina ‘Little Hill’. It was bred, registered, and introduced by Helen Winnington in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and later named by Inge Gazi.
Leprechaun has slightly smaller leaves than many other zebrinas, and they are covered in long, soft hairs.
Its seed parents, Little Hill has smooth, hairless leaves, while Purple Plush is hairy, without the silver stripes. Leprechaun combines the best of both, with fuzzy leaves and beautiful stripes.
It belongs to the zebrina species, which is probably the most common and best known indoor Tradescantia species. It is a creeping plant with slightly succulent stems and pointed leaves that range from green to deep purple, often, but not always, with two shimmering silver bands. There are more cultivars of zebrina than of any other tropical Tradescantia species.
This picture shows Leprechaun together with Little Hill and Purple Plush so you can see the differences.
